The season of spring not only brings allergies and senioritis, it also resurrects track and field season as runners and throwers dust off their spikes, hurdles, discus, and javelins. This season started off with some rough news from head coach Phil Dawson that he would be taking the season off in order to focus on his PhD in business. Assistant coach Tom Festa took over as head coach and welcomed back Joe Spagnolo as the distance coach as well as Sacred Heart alum John Viggs.

So far in this 2016 season, both girls’ and boys’ Sacred Heart track and field teams have racked up three wins against St. Paul, Waterbury Career Academy and Kennedy. For the sprinters and hurdlers, Ashley Vasiliou, Nicole White, Gianni Perrotti, Mariah Francis, and E.J. Williams, the breakout freshman, have all qualified for NVLs thus far and Perrotti, White, and Williams, have already qualified for States’. Captains Nicole White and Gianni Perrotti represent the epitome of a Sacred Heart star sprinter and hurdler as they enter their last season.

For the distance runners, Andruw Flemming and Johnny Warren have made NVLs and for the throwers, Nehway Sahn, Marissa Rodriguez, Brandon Austin, and Dave Lavigne have qualified for NVLs with only feet to go before making States as well and Nehway Sahn has also made NVLs in the long jump. Captains Sunshine Drysdale and Melissa Raymond represent the dedicated javelin throwers of Sacred Heart as they welcome a new crew on both the girls’ and boys’ sides.

As the season progresses, the Sacred Heart team is only getting better, stronger, and faster as they represent the Hearts on the track and on the field. The season isn’t over yet, so keep an eye peeled for more results!
